An empty cell with only one digit left that can go in it.
What to look for
Pick an empty cell and check its row, its column and its box. Every digit already there is ruled out for this cell. If eight of the nine digits are taken, the one that is left is the answer.
Why it works
A digit can appear only once in each row, column and box. If every other digit already sees this cell, nothing else can go there.

Naked single
Every digit but 4 is already in this cell’s row, column or box.
So this cell is 4.
The cells that show the pattern are in amber, the cells it changes in green, and the candidates it removes are circled.
