A digit with only one place left in a row, column or box.
What to look for
Pick a box (or a row, or a column) and a digit it is still missing. Wherever that digit already sits nearby, it rules out a whole line of cells. If only one empty cell is left for it, it goes there, even if that cell has other candidates.
Why it works
Every box must hold each digit once. If the digit cannot go anywhere else in the box, it has to go in the one place that is left.

Hidden single
In box 1, 5 fits in only one cell.
So this cell is 5.
The cells that show the pattern are in amber, the cells it changes in green, and the candidates it removes are circled.
